April Museum's collection of Chinese paintings arrived haphazard and it is interesting to notice how recent is the historic method of collecting in this field.

For instance a poem-scroll by Chang Jui-T'u (), which was bought last year, is actually the first piece of Chinese calligraphy to be acquired by the Museum as a work of art. The Department of American Indian Art and Primitive Cultures and the Department of Oriental Art are showing augmentations of existing collections.

From the first are costumes and costume accessories such as belts, bags, hats and ceremonial sticks of the Mexican Huichol Indians.

It is the first material in this category the Museum has acquired. ORIENTAL ART Among numerous important additions to the Department of Oriental Art is a Japanese print from the choice “Letter Sheet Set” of Hiroshige, one of several prints presented to the Museum by Mr.

Louis V. Ledoux. Another Japanese print (illustrated), Kiyomasu I, actor, aboutwas the gift of Mr. Frederic B. Pratt. I am pleased to announce that all of the accessions in the Carolyn Caddes Papers (M) are now described and available for research.
